First Time Home BuyersOne of the most basic tenets of the American dream is the freedom of owning your own home. In fact, the first pilgrims came to America in order to own property without fear of facing imprisonment should they default on a debt for this property. Buying your first home will be one of the most memorable experiences of your life.
A home is one of the most valued possessions in most peoples lives. A home emphasizes safety and stability in one's life and provides hope for the future. For countless thousands, their home is the only savings account they will ever manage to accumulate. My own father was so poor, as a child, he could not afford shoes to attend school. When I was about 2, my family purchased our first home with a whopping mortgage payment of $98 per month. There were many months when this $98 payment was difficult to meet, but as the value of the home continued to increase, my family became more stable. 40 years later (only a few years ago) my father sold this home, with much regret, to another young family who began the cycle again. With the sale of this home went the marks on the wall marking our families size growth, the broken and repaired asbestos siding from a thousand backyard baseball games, and a hundred thousand of life's most precious memories.
While our society has become more mobile, a home becomes an anchor point. A place to return for holidays, a gathering place for extended family, and the place you will always identify as where you are "from". However, most people make the mistake of delaying the purchase of their first home because they want to find a home or neighborhood where they want to spend the rest of their lives.
